Maqui Berry

The queen of berries

This exotic South American berry is a superfood dynamo. Maqui berries lead the pack with 3x more antioxidants than other berries. The colorful, blueberry-like superfruit is loaded rich in anti-inflammatory properties, helps control blood sugar, and supports gut health by encouraging the growth of good bacteria. Maqui berries are naturally sweet, with flavors akin to the blackberry, adding a pleasantly distinctive taste to our Berries Superfood Snack.

Why Maqui berries?

Maqui berries truly add the “super” to our Berries Superfood Snack. Here are a few of this amazing ingredient’s outstanding qualities:

Rich in Antioxidants

Maqui berries have many incredibly powerful benefits. Most notably, they are rich in antioxidants. In fact, Maqui berries are higher in antioxidants than açai and 3x higher than your average blueberry. An antioxidant-rich diet is important. Every day we’re exposed to free radicals, derived from pollutants all around us. When free radicals accumulate in the body, they damage our DNA and other cells. Researchers believe antioxidants stabilize free radicals and decrease the risk of certain diseases and cancers.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

This particular superfruit is loaded with anti-inflammatory properties. Maqui berries play an important role in helping the body combat inflammation caused by arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.

Controls Blood Sugar

Here at Nutreat, we’re especially attuned to the importance of foods that maintain blood sugar levels, instead of raising them. We are committed to making delicious low glycemic snacks. Dynamic ingredients like Maqui berries take it a step further. The anthocyanins, a flavonoid in this superfruit, actually helps control blood glucose levels, so the benefits continue even after you’ve enjoyed your last spoonful.

Supports Gut Health

Maqui berries may also aid digestion by encouraging the growth of good bacteria. Maintaining a harmonious microbiome in your gut keeps the bad bacteria at bay.

Where are Maqui berries from?

The Maqui berry grows wild in South America. While fairly unknown in the Western Hemisphere, Maqui berries have been enjoyed by the Mapuche people of Chile for generations.

What do Maqui berries taste like?

Maqui berries look a little like dark blueberries but with flavors similar to the blackberry. Like other berries, Maqui berries offer a lovely balance of sweet and tart notes but bring an additional element of earthiness that makes the Berries Superfood Snack a uniquely satisfying low glycemic snack.

Why the blueberry, raspberry, Maqui berry blend?

Prevention, prevention, prevention! At Nutreat, we absolutely love berries because of their powerful dose of antioxidants. They are a lovely addition to any dessert, but they especially shine in our superfood snack where their tartness is naturally complementary to the richness of coconut cream.

Blueberries were an obvious choice for the Berries Superfood Snack. Native to North America, the benefits of the blueberry are well-known. In fact, Native Americans have appreciated these juicy berries for generations.

Raspberries have long been one of our favorite berries. These velvety, ruby-colored gems are notably tangy with subtle floral characteristics– making their distinctive flavor unforgettable. Raspberries are also grown in the Pacific Northwest and widely-recognized for their nutritive properties.

Maqui berries were a particularly special addition. We first learned about them from our Chilean friend, who mentioned their importance to the indigenous people in Patagonia. With such a potent list of benefits, we knew we wanted to introduce Maqui berries to a broader audience. Plus, the Maqui berry brings a touch of earthiness to the snack, which beautifully balances the flavor of our berry blend.
