How the Diabetic Community Inspired Us to Create Nutreat

Nutreat was born out of my lifelong effort to make healthy food choices for myself and my family. I didn’t initially set out to be a food entrepreneur, but gradually I came to realize that I have a calling to help us live healthier lives. As my husband Rodolfo and I navigated our careers in the food and health care industries, we saw first-hand how reliant the world has become on fast, convenient food options. Unfortunately, this style of eating combined with other lifestyle choices has led to skyrocketing levels of obesity and diabetes. Before I began to look at the data, I already saw many friends, family, and myself struggling with weight and metabolic health. The data confirmed what I already knew. Nearly half of Americans are obese and one in three have been diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Even before COVID-19, we were already living in a global health crisis. By 2018, I had decided that I wanted to help tackle this issue, but I didn’t quite know how yet.

 

As I began to explore diabetes further, I realized how much our food system and food companies contribute to the problem. We have been trained that food should be cheap, abundant, and convenient and we are all paying the price for it.  Food writer Michael Pollan’s answer is simple, but rings true: “Eat food, mostly plants, not too much.”

  • Utilizing plants to ensure our diet is rich in fiber and our microbiome is happy and healthy
  • Avoiding chronic overeating and calorie surplus with portion control 

Of course, I’m a mom with a career. I understand how hard it can be to prepare fresh wholesome meals on a busy school night instead of ordering pizza (I have to confess that I do the same sometimes).  Healthy snacking choices are even harder. If you are managing diabetes or helping a loved one who is, these challenges grow exponentially.  

I studied which foods performed the best in improving gut-brain connection and the importance of nutrition in this process. The prototypes I developed in our own kitchen were then turned into the products you know and love, using Cornell University's technology in food safety and processes.
