A powerful little seed.

Flaxseeds boast big benefits in a small package. They are an amazing plant-based food and rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and lignans. Omega-3s benefit heart health, lower blood cholesterol, and reduce the risk of heart disease. Lignans are particularly beneficial in helping to balance hormones and protecting against some cancers, including breast cancer and prostate cancer. Soluble and insoluble fiber, which supports digestive health, also helps you feel full. We love putting these little seeds to work in our low GI snacks.

What are the benefits of flaxseeds?

Flaxseeds are surprisingly nutritious despite their small size, and live up to their superfood status for a number of reasons. The foremost being their high content of plant-based omega-3s, protein, fiber, and lignans. Learn about the many benefits of these power-packed little seeds:

Omega-3s help your cardiovascular system run smoothly, preventing arteries and blood vessels from becoming blocked. Flaxseed is a good plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acid, specifically ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). ALA is an essential fatty acid that your body needs but doesn’t produce. Together with fiber and lignans, also abundant in flaxseed, these powerful nutrients help lower blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Flaxseeds contain 700-800 times more lignans than any other food. Lignans contain both antioxidants and phytoestrogens, which may protect against hormone-related cancers, such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. Phytoestrogens, specifically, act much like the estrogen hormone, and may slow or even reduce the growth of hormone-sensitive tumors. Similarly, ALA also helps protect the body from cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth. Enjoying flaxseeds throughout adolescence can be especially beneficial in cancer prevention and reduction later in life.

Supports Healthy Digestion

Consuming a diet rich in dietary fiber provides a number of benefits to your health, particularly your digestive system. Flaxseeds are rich in both soluble and insoluble fiber, and a complementary addition to our Berries Superfood Creme.

Soluble fiber does a couple of important things. It prevents fats from being digested and absorbed, which helps lower cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart-related diseases. Additionally, soluble fiber slows digestion, contributing to more stable blood sugar levels, so you feel energized without any spike or subsequent crash.

The role of insoluble fiber is to move food waste through the body, keeping your gut happy. Additionally, insoluble fiber slows the release of sugar into the blood, so like soluble fiber, it also contributes to lower blood glucose levels. Both types of fiber in flaxseeds help you feel satiated, so you’re less inclined to overeat.

Supports Weight Management

As mentioned above, fiber creates a feeling of fullness and slows digestion. When digestion slows, your body is able to extract more nutrients from the food you eat, like our superfood cremes. As a result, the feeling of satisfaction after eating something delicious last longer.

Flaxseed is also high in plant-based protein. Just as animal protein is filling and satiating, protein from flaxseed can have the same affect, helping to reduce hunger and prevent overeating.
