For thousands of years, chocolate has been an object of desire, revered for its heavenly aroma and flavor. Today, we know that it is equally robust in mood-boosting and heart-healthy nutrients. So what’s cocoa liquor? Despite its name, it has nothing to do with alcohol. Liquor here refers to liquid. To produce cocoa liquor, cocoa beans are first fermented, dried, and roasted. Then the outer skin is removed, leaving behind the nibs which are then ground into a paste or liquid. At this point, the cocoa mass is either cooled and made into blocks, or processed for a variety of uses. Is chocolate actually good for you?

Many packaged chocolate bars contain added sugar, butter fat, or artificial colors and flavors. Additionally, chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or higher contains more nutrients. The heart-healthy benefits of chocolate come from flavonoids. These polyphenolic plant compounds are naturally occurring in fruits, vegetables, and you guessed it, chocolate! Flavanols are the specific type of flavonoid that chocolate contains. They are incredibly powerful, helping a number of our body’s systems, including the cardiovascular system. More specifically, flavanols have been found to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation, which aids in preventing cardiovascular disease. 

Flavanols are also linked to diabetes prevention thanks to their influence on insulin secretion. When enjoyed in small quantities, and in a low glycemic snack like Nutreat Chocolate Superfood Snack, the flavanols reduce oxidative stress and improve insulin sensitivity. 

Improves Cognition

These same heart-helping flavanols also support neurological health by reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow to the brain.
