The magic of cocoa, food of the gods.
For thousands of years, chocolate has been an object of desire, revered for its heavenly aroma and flavor. Today, we know that it is equally robust in mood-boosting and heart-healthy nutrients. Chocolate makes you feel happier, improves cognition, and is an excellent source of antioxidants, iron, magnesium, and zinc.
So what’s cocoa liquor? Despite its name, it has nothing to do with alcohol. Liquor here refers to liquid. To produce cocoa liquor, cocoa beans are first fermented, dried, and roasted. Then the outer skin is removed, leaving behind the nibs which are then ground into a paste or liquid. At this point, the cocoa mass is either cooled and made into blocks, or processed for a variety of uses. We use 100% pure cocoa liquor to retain all the sacred nutrients and blissful pleasure of the cocoa bean.
Is chocolate actually good for you?
Chocolate, specifically 100% chocolate, is a win-win ingredient. It is both delicious and provides a variety of benefits. One of the most important things to look for is purity. Many packaged chocolate bars contain added sugar, butter fat, or artificial colors and flavors. Additionally, chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or higher contains more nutrients. For the Nutreat Chocolate Superfood Snack, we use 100% pure organic cocoa liquor to ensure you get the most benefits.
Chocolate in its purest form is quite bitter. We worked with chocolate expert and Chocolopolis founder, Lauren Adler to learn how to maximize nutrition without compromising flavor. We decided to start with 100% pure cocoa liquor because of its concentration of nutrients. When we shared our first samples of the Chocolate Superfood Snack with Lauren, she was surprised and delighted by the flavor we accomplished. The result is a positively mouthwatering low glycemic snack made with 100% pure cocoa liquor and no added sugar.
Learn about the amazing benefits of this delicious and nutritious superfood:
The heart-healthy benefits of chocolate come from flavonoids. These polyphenolic plant compounds are naturally occurring in fruits, vegetables, and you guessed it, chocolate! Flavanols are the specific type of flavonoid that chocolate contains. They are incredibly powerful, helping a number of our body’s systems, including the cardiovascular system. More specifically, flavanols have been found to lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation, which aids in preventing cardiovascular disease.
Flavanols are also linked to diabetes prevention thanks to their influence on insulin secretion. When enjoyed in small quantities, and in a low glycemic snack like Nutreat Chocolate Superfood Snack, the flavanols reduce oxidative stress and improve insulin sensitivity.
These same heart-helping flavanols also support neurological health by reducing inflammation and increasing blood flow to the brain. More specifically, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties found in chocolate may safeguard the brain against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Small amounts of stimulants like caffeine and theobromine are also helpful in boosting brain function.
Rich in Antioxidants
Chocolate is quite high in antioxidants like flavanols and other polyphenols. Cocoa liquor, specifically, has more antioxidants than apples, cranberry juice, and red wine. The high content of antioxidants in cocoa liquor is particularly beneficial in neutralizing free radicals, which can cause cell damage and lead to a range of diseases and conditions. These benefits are specific to dark chocolate because the milk in milk chocolate actually interferes with the polyphenols. While we can’t always control our exposure to pollutants, we can be proactive by consuming a diet rich in antioxidants to help combat the adverse effects of oxidative stress.
Does just the thought of chocolate bring a smile to your face? We’re right there with you. There is something so joyful about the rich, distinctive flavor. While the flavanols and stimulants found in chocolate may have something to do with its mood-boosting effects, the experience alone actually makes us happy. It’s for this reason that a Chocolate Superfood Snack was a no-brainer for us. We marry the heavenly flavors and many benefits of chocolate with our delicious coconut cream / green banana blend for a seemingly indulgent, but totally healthy treat.
Supports Healthy Digestion
Dark chocolate is high in fiber, both soluble and insoluble. Fiber is essential for proper digestion and plays a role in fighting diabetes. Fiber helps slow the absorption of sugar and controls blood sugar levels. Stable blood glucose levels contribute to reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. Fiber also helps you feel full, an important factor in weight management.
